Taco Bell E. coli Lawsuits

In November 2006, a large-scale E. coli outbreak occurred in the Northeast United States. The source of the E. coli food poisoning was contaminated lettuce served at several Taco Bell restaurants. As a result, more than 70 people developed severe E. coli food poisoning, 53 individuals had to be hospitalized, and eight victims developed potentially fatal complications, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome. All of the E. coli victims had to take time off work and incur medical expenses, as well as experience physical pain and emotional anguish. In order to obtain compensation for their damages, several victims filed lawsuits against Taco Bell that were subsequently settled for undisclosed amounts.

E. coli Contamination at Taco Bell Restaurants

After Taco Bell Company learned about several cases of E. coli food poisoning linked to its restaurants, the company closed several restaurants and recalled some of its products. In addition, Taco Bell restaurants were thoroughly inspected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the FDA and the USDA. The health investigators found E. coli bacteria in the shredded lettuce served at several Taco Bell locations. In addition, two of the Taco Bell chefs tested positive for E. coli even though they did not have any symptoms of E. coli food poisoning.

Taco Bell E. coli Lawsuits

The results of the environmental health investigation suggested that Taco Bell restaurants might have acted negligently in failing to provide consumers with harmless products. This failure was the basis of several personal injury lawsuits filed against the company. The suits alleged that the victims had incurred financial, physical and emotional damages as a result of E. coli food poisoning contracted at Taco Bell restaurants. In order to settle the lawsuits, Taco Bell subsequently agreed to provide victims with sizeable compensation.

One of the most well known Taco Bell lawsuits was filed by the parents of an 11-year-old boy who fell violently ill after enjoying tacos at a Taco Bell location in New York. Another renowned lawsuit was brought forth by a woman in Pennsylvania who experienced acute kidney failure, seizures and a coma as a result of an E. coli infection contracted at a Taco Bell restaurant. While the woman recovered from her coma, she was left with permanent kidney damage.
