Caudill Salmonella Outbreak - Legal Help

In 2009, Caudill Sprout Company became the epicenter of a large-scale salmonella outbreak that sickened 235 individuals nationwide. The company's alfalfa seeds were found to contain Salmonella Saintpaul, a dangerous strain of the salmonella bacteria that can cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, vomiting and nausea. In some cases, salmonella infection can cause potentially life-threatening complications, such as blood contamination, severe dehydration and Reiter's syndrome ─ a combination of arthritis, conjunctivitis and painful urination.

Caudill Sprouts Recall

After learning about several salmonellosis cases linked to alfalfa sprouts grown from the company's seeds, the Caudill Sprout Company recalled several batches of seeds. The recalled seeds were distributed in 50-pound bags to food producers throughout the United States, causing contamination of their respective products. Because the salmonella bacteria had infected the seeds, even if the alfalfa sprout growers followed proper growing practices and washed their produce thoroughly, the bacteria could not be removed.

In order to prevent the salmonellosis epidemic from spreading, the FDA issued a blanket warning cautioning consumers not to eat alfalfa sprouts or foods containing alfalfa sprouts. The warning applies to the entire territory of the United States because the Caudill Seed Company shipped its products nationwide, and the growers of alfalfa sprouts might have subsequently distributed their produce to a number of stores and restaurants. The initial investigation conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found 235 instances of salmonellosis caused by contaminated sprouts. Salmonellosis cases were reported from Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, South Dakota and West Virginia.

Caudill Salmonella Contamination Legal Recourse

Several salmonellosis victims who developed severe diarrheal illness after consuming contaminated alfalfa sprouts filed personal injury lawsuits against the Caudill Sprout Company. Should the plaintiffs of Caudill sprouts lawsuits successfully demonstrate that they incurred damages as a result of salmonella infection caused by contaminated sprouts, they might compel Caudill to provide compensation. Damages awarded in similar personal injury cases have reached several million dollars in reimbursement to victims for medical expenses, lost wages, reduced future income, physical pain and emotional distress.
